Brussel Sprouts

Crispy bits of bacon and a versatile soy sauce-based marinade that gives the perfect punch of flavor to boring old Brussels sprouts. Mmm Bacon! This recipe is simple and easy to whip up in minutes. Brussels sprouts are such a great side dish and they are so versatile.

I have been making these Brussels sprouts for years. My husband used to absolutely dislike these so much, he would complain about how much they stunk up the kitchen. One night we went out to dinner and he ordered them as a side and devoured the whole dish!! How rude!? Won’t eat mine but he will eat the ones at the restaurant in a second… Welllll once he finally gave mine a chance, Brussels sprouts have totally become a weekly request. Success !

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BRUSSELS SPROUTS

The best part about these Brussels sprouts? It only requires one pan. You can use a cast iron skillet or just a regular skillet. So first up, let’s talk ingredients! You will need 4-6 pieces of bacon (thick cut is the best), 12oz bag of Brussels sprouts (I prefer fresh over frozen) and Kalbi marinade. The Kalbi marinade that we use can be purchased at Kowalski’s Market. This marinade has great flavor and can be used in a variety of meals. Now, I understand Kalbi marinade is hard to get your hands on if you are not local to the Twin Cities. So if you are unable to get that, you can try any type of Korean BBQ marinade. Or keep it simple and drizzle some Balsamic on top.

LET’S GET TO FRYING!

First up, you will want to fry up your bacon over medium high heat. When the bacon is cooked to your liking, set it aside. Now, wash up your Brussels sprouts and cut them in half. Place them in the same skillet where the bacon was fried. I am telling you the best part about these Brussels is the fact that they are cooked in the bacon grease, talk about FLAVOR!!! Stir the Brussels sprouts and get them coated in the grease. Cover the Brussels with a lid and let them cook for 5-10 minutes(on low heat) or until they are soft and tender.

Now when you have the Brussels browned, turn the stove off. Chop up your crispy bacon real quick, feel free to take a sample and throw it into the Brussels sprouts. Add in a tablespoon of the marinade of your choice.. Kalbi, Korean BBQ sauce or Balsamic Vinaigrette. Alright, once you get everything incorporated with the sauce, it is time to serve the Brussels sprouts and enjoy!

As you can see, these sprouts are so easy to whip up as an appetizer or a side dish. Also, they can be made in the oven. Just chop them up as usual and mix with some avocado oil. Preheat your oven to 400. Place on a baking sheet and bake 20-30 minutes (until they are crispy). They pair great with sweet potatoes, turkey, steak, chicken.. and so on! Looking for something to bring to Thanksgiving? Look no further than these Brussels Sprouts.
