Cornbread Stuffing

A traditional Thanksgiving classic side dish, made with delicious cornbread. You won’t believe how easy it is to make this cornbread stuffing from scratch and it only requires a few simple ingredients.

My first question is.. do you call it stuffing or dressing? We have always known it to be called stuffing. But as I was doing my research I found that with stuffing, some of it is placed inside of the Turkey and the rest you gobble up on your plate. Dressing is just baked on a pan in the oven. Realistically, it is the same thing and I am sticking to calling it stuffing No Thanksgiving meal is complete without stuffing, especially this cornbread stuffing.

This recipe is made with spices, vegetables, French bread and cornbread. Fun fact… I never used to like stuffing until I started making and experimenting with it myself. Some people like it light and fluffy and others like it thick and firm. I just prefer mine to be light, flavorful and homemade. The best part about this recipe, is that you can add more of whatever you like to get it to your desired texture and flavor. It’s that easy! So follow along below and let’s get started.

INGREDIENTS

  • French bread

  • cornbread

  • butter

  • onion

  • celery

  • chicken broth

  • dried basil

  • dried thyme

  • poultry seasoning

  • fresh parsley

  • salt & pepper to taste

  • baking dish

  • mixing bowls

GOBBLE GOBBLE, LET’S MAKE THE CORNBREAD STUFFING.

Before we dive in, make sure your bread cubes are dried. You can do this 1 day before by cutting the bread into little cubes, placing the cubes on a baking sheet and letting them dry out. The other way you can do it, is by placing the baking sheet in the oven with the bread crumbs on it at 250 degrees for 20-30 min or until they are crispy.

Firstly, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Secondly, place your butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Thirdly, add in your onion and celery and cook them until they are soft; about 7-10 minutes. Now it is time to mix in some FLAVOR!! Fourthly, add in your basil, thyme, parsley, poultry seasoning and chicken broth. Reduce the heat and let simmer for a few minutes. After that, place your bread cubes in a large bowl. Slowly add in the broth mixture, tossing as you go. Be careful not to add too much. You don’t want the bread to be mush! Little tip, I added about half of the mixture in to start and baked it. Then added more half way through.

Now, keep adding the mixture until everything is coated evenly. Lastly, layer the mixture in a square baking dish. Place it in the oven and cook until it is golden brown. About 15-20 minutes. While it is cooking, keep an eye on it. If it looks dry and needs to be mixed, go ahead and do that. We like to put the oven to broil to crisp it up a bit right before we take it out. Now it’s time to enjoy!

THIS CORNBREAD STUFFING IS DELICIOUS, I KNOW!

This pairs perfectly with that Thanksgiving day turkey as well as pork chops that you made on a random Tuesday night. Personally, I think that Thanksgiving is not complete without stuffing and the flavor of this cornbread stuffing is out of this world. Be sure to give this recipe a try.
