Mom’s Chex Mix

Sugar, spice and lots of crunch! Caramel drizzled over corn Chex studded with nuts and pretzel sticks for sweet and salty perfection. My moms Chex mix recipe has been around forever. All of us look forward to dummying the bowl of it every Christmas. It is a Zutz family tradition. Once you start, you just can’t stop.

Putting this snack together is so fun and, as you can see, pretty basic. Kids can get involved in the holiday pouring and stirring, too! But, quick.. can I share a secret? I have only made this twice in my life. Why!? Welll…. I cannot even have it in my house without eating it all!! Thankfully I can always count on my mom to provide it during the Holidays. Only a handful of ingredients and you’ve got yourself one tasty treat!

INGREDIENTS

  • brown sugar

  • butter

  • light Karo syrup

  • Chex cereal

  • peanuts

  • pretzel sticks

LET’S MAKE IT!

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. First up, the caramel sauce. In a small sauce pan, melt together 2 cups of brown sugar, 1 cup of butter and 1/2 cup of Karo syrup and bring to a boil. Boil for 2-3 minutes. In your large roasted pan, making sure it is sprayed with non stick cooking spray…. Pour in the Chex cereal, peanut and pretzel sticks and mix together. Next, you are going to pour the caramel sauce over all of that and stir with a wooden spoon. Making sure everything is covered.

Finally, you are going to bake my moms Chex mix for a total of 45 minutes and stir every 15 minutes. While it is baking, lay out wax paper and when it is done, pour onto the wax paper to cool. Store in a tupperware for up to 7 days! But trust me, you will want to sample some of this right away.

GET YOUR SNACK ON!

My moms Chex mix recipe makes the most ooey-gooey, where-did-it-go sweet and salty snack. This would be a super easy gift to hand out to your neighbors, friends or teachers. AND this can be made truly anytime of the year, not just during the Holidays. I am telling you this is the best snacking mix recipe by far. Thanks mom They say this recipe can last up to 6 weeks if you store it properly but in my house it lasts about 2 hours. If anyone gets to 6 weeks with it, let me know.. I could use that type of discipline.

Enjoy!
